Going Green
Our Green facilities.
Meca was nominated in Mexico to a National Award for Energy Savings due to the following actions done during 2008 and 2009.
- Isolated all walls in the buildings.
- Changed all air compressors, going from traditional piston system to new Ingersoll Rand Scroll system.
- Changed 100% of lighting system moving from T-12 type to T-8, and going from old type balastras to new magnetic electronic balastras, which do not generate heat and save as much as 30% on electricity.
- Changed 100% Refrigeration equipment: In the San Luis, Mexicali, Mexico and Yuma, Arizona region we get temperatures as high as 120 degress farenheit during the summer, reason why our electrical bills are very high during the months of May-Sept. We changed all equipment moving from 9 SEER efficiency to the latest 13 SEER from York.
- Results from the above: We have had so far a 50% reduction in electricity usage in our main sewing floor, going from 749 Kwh per person to 374 Kwh per person, and a 35% reduction including both buildings.
Actions taking place in 2010.
- Increase efficiency: In order to increase our efficiency on energy usage on top of actions taken during 2008 & 2009, a group of specialists is checking all our connections, main transfomers and main switch boxes in order to balance our electricity usage per circuit.
- We have created our internal Committe for energy savings which is guided by external consultants, the goal is to reduce energy usage on every corner of the factory... and taking it as far as to all our associate's homes.
- We have done a strategic partnership plan with the sewing machine brands, Brother and Yamato, in order to change 100% of our old existing equipment to the newest "direct motor drive" machines which save as much as 70% on energy usage and a 30% increase on production output.
